A simple but nonetheless captivating stone that takes the appearance of a human skull.

Here is the proud owner and founder of the Rare Stone Museum, Mr. Bunyong.

When asked to choose one of his favorite stones, Mr. Bunyong had no hesitation in choosing this stone, labeled theSouth-Sea Goddess Bhodhisat "Guangyin".

Look at the outline created by the white calcite. Can you identify the shape?

The next stone is very interesting. Comprising a single piece of stone, it takes on the appearance of two penguins in an embrace. The exhibit was labeled Great Pleasure to Meet.

Some of the stones incorporate beautiful fossils like this large exhibit from Morocco.

Some of the smaller and more delicate exhibits are presented in glass display cabinets.

Zebra rock

Rare Zebra Rock being mined on Territory cattle station

A new deposit of the rare Zebra Rock has been discovered on Newry Station about 70km from Kununurra, just inside the Northern Territory border.

The Kimberley Stone company has begun mining this latest find and selling the rock locally in markets around the Kimberley and Territory.

Like the name suggests, the stone is famous for its unique striped and spotted patterns, and so far, the only place in the world where this stone has been found is the Lake Argyle catchment area.

The Territory's newest mining venture has a workforce of two, with Ruth Duncan and her partner being the brains and brawn behind the project.

"We try to do everything as gently as we can," says Ms Duncan.

"Trees that we knock down we replant, and when we first started getting the stone we used a crow-bar and shovel, but we now rely on a backhoe... so low impact."

The company currently uses the stone to create ornamental pieces such as bowls, platters and jewellery.

But Ms Duncan says the size of their deposit will allow them to branch into bigger projects.

"At some of the deposits we have very large blocks of Zebra Rock," she says.

"So what we want to do in the future is purchase a wire-saw, which will enable us to cut large samples for bench-tops, table-tops and even tiles,

"There's a lot of sensational stone here and we can't wait to get it out there on the open market."

Taishan stone

Taishan stone – the nature of wonder 2011-06-24   Since January 14, a solo exhibition of rare Taishan stones from the collection of Shandong collector Zhao Guangxing has been held at the gallery of Dafang Hotel in western Beijing. On January 15 and 16, more than 50 collectors of rare stones from across the country gathered at a seminar on Taishan stones. Zhao's collections of Olympic Games stones were popular at home and abroad in August 2008, and his 63 pieces of stone at the National Games were exhibited in the hall in October 2009. Stone-collecting is a tradition that goes back at least 1,000 years in China. The appreciation of stone art has an extensive and profound history in China. Zhao's stones were admired for their resemblance to mountains or caves, particularly the magical peaks and subterranean paradises believed to be inhabited by immortal beings. Some rocks were appreciated for their resemblance to animals, birds, human figures, mythical creatures, and people. Different colors can be found among the stones. These stones were shaped and cultivated by erosion from water, wind, heat and other natural factors for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of years.
