Taishan stone

Taishan stone – the nature of wonder
2011-06-24

Since January 14, a solo exhibition of rare Taishan stones from the collection of Shandong collector Zhao Guangxing has been held at the gallery of Dafang Hotel in western Beijing. On January 15 and 16, more than 50 collectors of rare stones from across the country gathered at a seminar on Taishan stones.
Zhao's collections of Olympic Games stones were popular at home and abroad in August 2008, and his 63 pieces of stone at the National Games were exhibited in the hall in October 2009.
Stone-collecting is a tradition that goes back at least 1,000 years in China. The appreciation of stone art has an extensive and profound history in China.
Zhao's stones were admired for their resemblance to mountains or caves, particularly the magical peaks and subterranean paradises believed to be inhabited by immortal beings. Some rocks were appreciated for their resemblance to animals, birds, human figures, mythical creatures, and people. Different colors can be found among the stones. These stones were shaped and cultivated by erosion from water, wind, heat and other natural factors for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of years. They are pieces of timeless art and a true wonder of nature.
